What is Purwang and Uttarang? To understand the answer, it is very important to know about the octave(Saptak).
The octave divided into two equal parts Sa Re Ga Ma and Pa Dha Ni Sa, divided into two parts. The first part Sa Re Ga Ma is called Purwang, and the second part Pa Dha Ni Sa is called Uttarang. After some time Purwang was extended from Sa to Pa and Uttarang from Ma to Sa of Taar Saptak.
Purwardh and Uttarardh
As the octave was divided into two parts, the 24 hour time was also divided into two equal parts. The first part was kept from 12:00pm to 12:00am, and the second part was from 12:00am to 12:00pm. The first part is called the Purwardh and the second part is the Uttarardh.

पूर्वांग और उत्तरांग क्या है ?? इसका उत्तर समझने के लिए सप्तक के बारे में जानना बहुत जरूरी है।
सप्तक को दो बराबर भागों में विभाजित कर दिया गया सा रे ग म और प ध नि सां, इन दो हिस्सों में बांट दिया। प्रथम भाग सा रे ग म को पूर्वांग कहते हैं। और दूसरा भाग प ध नि सां को उत्तरांग कहते हैं। कुछ समय बाद पूर्वांग को सा से प तक और उत्तरांग को म से तार सप्तक के सां तक बढ़ा दिया गया।
पूर्वार्ध और उत्तरार्ध
जिस प्रकार सप्तक को दो भागों में बांट दिया गया उसी प्रकार 24 घंटे के समय को भी दो बराबर भागों में बांटा गया। पहला भाग 12:00 बजे दिन से 12:00 बजे रात तक और दूसरा भाग 12:00 बजे रात से 12:00 बजे दिन तक रखा गया। इसमें प्रथम भाग को पूर्वार्ध और दूसरे भाग को उत्तरार्ध कहते हैं।
